The earliest New Year’s celebration is thought to have taken place in Mesopotamia around 2000 B.C. The ancient people performed religious rituals and other celebrations to mark the event, but all of it took place in March, not January. According to the History channel, the New Year’s celebration month changed to January during Roman times.
